1837 One Of The Oldest Shops In Town

In 19th century Prussia, the ideas of the French Revolution could no longer be suppressed despite the victory over Napoleon in 1815. The citizens were given new rights - including freedom of trade. Since then, it has no longer been the guilds that decided on the choice of occupation, but every citizen himself.

This can also be seen at the SOMMERFRISCHE. The street house in which today our holiday apartments are situated was built in the first quarter of the 18th century - and on the ground floor (where today the Memoiren Manufaktur has its office) a merchant opened a shop as early as 1837. Unfortunately, we do not know what was sold there at that time, but it may have been one of the first shops in the city.

The house with the crippled hipped roof has survived a lot since then. Not only two world wars, but also the one or other, from today's point of view, daring reconstruction. It took us several attempts to find a structural engineer who was up to the task...
